July 2016 \\ Category: Alzheimer'band Parkinson's disease
The newest research from May 2016 published in Frontiers in Neuroscience shows that we should probably rethink the causes of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease (1). Until now there has not been a known cause for dementia - and there has certainly not been a cure to it.
But researchers at University of Adelaide School of Biological Sciences in Australia have assembled strong evidence that these diseases is caused by a process, what they call ‘auto-inflammation’ - this is where the body's own immune system develops a constant ‘persistent’ inflammatory response in the body and over time causes the brain cells to die - and cause Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Diseases. They conclude that the reason is an ‘out-of-control immune system’ (3).
This out-of-control immune system, where the body kills it’s own brain cells appears due to e.g. infections, toxins, genetic mutations or physical injury. This leads us to think that we can maybe prevent Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s if we do not expose ourselves to toxins and live healthy and get less infections…?
Currently there is no effective medical treatments to assist the millions of affected people, and these diseases are an enormous burden on families and the public health care system. Alzheimer’s Disease is related to age, and as we live longer, there will be more people with Alzheimers. In 2050 it is predicted that there will be double the number of people with dementia in the US and Australia. In UK there will be 1 million people with dementia in 2025 (2). And about 100.000 people in Denmark, where it is the 5th most common cause of death (4). These numbers correspond to about 2% in both populations.
In research it is a paradigm shift and no-one knows what this research will lead to or reveal in the future. The pharmaceutical industry will obviously research in new drugs that will delay or stop the progression of this ‘auto-inflammation’. But we believe that it is possible to PREVENT these devastating diseases by treating your immune system well.
More than 99% of clinical trials for Alzheimer’s drugs fails. This means that dementia is another diseases without a cure.
