Motivation for Health Republic

My motivation to start Health Republic arose when I gradually started understanding how important nutrition is to my health. I had a severe brain haemorrhage in 1998 which changed my life completely. I was hospitalised for approx. 3 months and had 4 operations in the brain. After the last major operation I was completely paralysed in my right side and did intensive physical and cognitive rehab for a year. This long period in contact with the medical establishment have given me a lot of insights into how the medical system operates and how it treats patients.

A lesson that was brought powerfully to me is that you cannot take everything on trust, you have to take charge yourself, if you only leave it to the system you are much worse off than if you are proactive. I think that the person who walks into a consultation with a doctor and says, “I have been investigating and it seems to me that this, this and this might be helpful, what do you think?” has a better chance of getting the proper treatment than the person who comes and says: “Help me”. You can do a lot of research, though of course you can’t do everything yourself. When I needed help, I sought advice. However, ultimately it came down to a question of self-empowerment, to advocating for myself.

Taking charge of my health also meant evaluating my lifestyle, as it was stress and a generally unhealthy lifestyle that led to my haemorrhage. This has been an ongoing process and I have the recent years become very health conscious and been living healthy life with focus on getting the right nutrition. A key to this has been my morning shake, which I, by the way, am quite proud of :)

Background

I hold a Masters degree from Copenhagen business school and have worked in several big companies within fast moving consumer goods before my brain haemorrhage.

After my brain haemorrhage I have taken an education to become a Psychotherapist.

I have supplemented this education with several courses in Shock Trauma therapy etc.

I have recently started a 1-year on-line course to become a Health coach.

Responsibilities

I am responsible for the overall content of Health republic. I write a few articles but I mainly edit.

Due to my interest in shakes I help to develop the best recipes for these.

Motivation for Health Republic

I have all my life been brought up with the advise of healthy food equals fat-free food. But moving to Barcelona with my family changed this perception of food and lifestyle. I learned that the Spaniards are the people in Europe with highest life expectancy - even though they eat food full of (unsaturated) fat like fatty fish, avocados, nuts, seeds etc. I started to wonder how this could match my child hood believe and got introduced to the studies of anti-inflammatory food and what this can do to health.

Background

I have a masters degree from Copenhagen Business School in International Marketing and Management. I advise companies in how they should exploit the possibilities of digital media and communication. The combination of my enthusiasm for food with my business background was a perfect combination for the development of Health Republic

Responsibilities

I advise in concept development of Health Republic, I do background analysis of the subjects and write articles.
